The Story

Elwood Pens was founded by Dylan Thompson-Mackay on June 6, 2016.

Dylan Working in the Elwood Pens Workshop

We produce handcrafted wooden pens and pencils.

It began with Dylan making pens and mechanical pencils at the start of school while attending the Business Administration program at the Nova Scotia Community College in September of 2014 .

He began making the pens in his uncles garage, and later moved to a shed in his backyard when becoming an official business in 2016.

The company now operates from a retail store at 1574 Argyle Street, Suite 4. This location is just above The Bitter End close to Pizza Corner in downtown Halifax. The workshop where the pens are made in is right next door to the retail location, and all of the pens are still handcrafted by the Elwood Pens team.

We have over 40 different types of wood from around the world as well as a number of different styles of pens/pencils. There are woods from Central America and Nova Scotia as two direct examples.

Ballpoint, Gel, Rollerball and Fountain Pens are available. There are also Mechanical Pencils available that come in different styles. Every pen comes with a gift box, and a small card that tells the story of the business and what kind of wood the pen is made of. All prices vary based on the wood and the style of pen being purchased.

The name 'Elwood' comes from Dylan’s paternal grandfather Elwood MacKay.

The logo is a direct trace of Elwood’s signature.

Elwood was a Master Machinist, and a very talented crafts-person/trades-person in his own right. However, Elwood also had his own issues during his life.

Elwood had a drinking problem for part of his life. He was a man filled with a large amount of talent, but had negative aspects to him as well. A story that is very common to people around the world, and it is stories like this that are not talked about publicly.

Elwood Pens is all about trying to make the world a better place, while creating high quality items that people enjoy. The company is making a commitment to donate 5% of our gross revenue from June 1st - December 31st, 2018 to non-profit organizations who are already making a difference in communities.

The focus of Elwood Pens is to create conversation around issues that are not talked about publicly, and give people an opportunity to share their story.

We want to allow conversation around negative issues that affect many people in Nova Scotia and Canada to become easier to talk about. I feel there is no better way to do this than to try and create a conversation between all groups of people, as well as financially assist in creating a more stable world for everyone.

Elwood Pens is built around the 3 values of: Quality, Honesty, and Integrity.

These 3 values come from a commitment to providing the best product possible, being as honest as possible, and having the same level of integrity with every customer.

Elwood Pens is committed to providing the highest quality handmade wooden pens and mechanical pens possible, and to try and be a business leader in creating discussion around as many issues as possible in the world.
